Go to Sleep is a lush orchestration of an original lullaby dedicated to my new grandson. The melody, primarily stated in the first violins, is intended to reinforce the corresponding, and heartwarming, bedtime poem:

A foreboding opening from the upper woodwinds sets the scene for Resistance. Building into an ominous theme from the low brass and horns, this dramatic piece moves to an up-tempo romp led by pulsing low winds and aggressive percussion interjections. Soaring horn lines, complete with dramatic rips, take us back to the opening theme, and the trepidation of an intense and dissonant ending.

Spunk

I'm looking forward to attending The Midwest Clinic this week in Chicago. This is the 78th year of the International Band and Orchestra Conference. Ever since my time at Northwestern University (just north of Chicago), I've had a fond attachment to this significant event in the band and orchestra world. It will be great to connect with colleagues and and see some old friends.

Although the great clinics and unforgettable performances will be highlights for me, the reason for most of my excitement is the premier performance of one of my new full orchestra pieces, "North To Race Point." This Grade 5 selection is published by C. Alan Publications and lasts a little over 6 minutes. It was selected for performance by the fabulous Jordan High School Symphony. This 125-member orchestra is from Fulshear, Texas, a suburb of Houston, and they are a spectacular ensemble. Congratulations to them for being selected to perform at this prestigious event.

As the title suggests, it's an anxious little ditty. :-) With lots of important dissonances and a liberal use of the "Bartok snap," it was a lot of fun to write. Hopefully it's fun to play. Miss Admiral Gordon's Strathspey

Composed around 1775 by Scottish fiddler William Marshall, Miss Admiral Gordon’s Strathspey is a traditional strathspey dance tune. It was written in honor of Margaret Gordon, daughter and only surviving child of Admiral William Gordon. Named for the Strathspey region of Scotland, the strathspey dance is a popular form of country dance, usually in 4/4 time and slower than a reel or jig. It is characterized by the use of the “Scots Snap" rhythm — a sixteenth note followed by a dotted eighth note, or in reverse order.

Recently I have been reflecting upon what has inspired me to write many of my compositions over the past year or so. My new surroundings have been a constant source of inspiration and an inexhaustible resource that I can draw upon for serenity and contentment. So, I thought it would be interesting to put together a short list of 6 of my compositions that have been directly inspired by my time on Cape Cod, MA. Explore these and share your thoughts.

1. Cape Cod Shanty

Centuries-old sea shanties made the drudgery and monotony of a sailor’s work more tolerable. Sung on the decks of merchant, fishing, or whaling ships, these often colorful songs have become an important part of our folk music history. Cape Cod Shanty is a full orchestra arrangement of “Cape Cod Girls”, a call-and-response song with some interesting lyrics.

2. North To Race Point

President John F. Kennedy signed a bill on August 7, 1961 establishing the Cape Cod National Seashore. The National Park Service describes it as "pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands supporting diverse species, lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs along 40 miles of the eastern coast of Cape Cod." Henry David Thoreau described his walk up the eastern coast in his book "Cape Cod." Standing on the beach surrounded by towering sand dunes, he stated, "A man may stand there and put all America behind him." North To Race Point is inspired by an exploration of this stretch of the beautiful North Atlantic coastline.

3. Sunset On Cape Cod Bay

There is a feeling of calm and humility that consumes you as you watch the sun set or rise over the ocean. On the north coast of Cape Cod lies Cape Cod Bay. The relative calm of the water reflects all the colors of the sun and sky as the sun slowly sets. At low tide the tidal flats show off their rippled sand with channels of sunlit water. The vivid colors change as the sun nears the horizon. The darkening blue sky is a backdrop for the pink, orange, yellow, and red that make any clouds glow with warmth. Silhouettes of passing seagulls dot the scene like a painting. Crowds gather in the summer as a day at the beach ends, and hearty locals enjoy the beauty on display on a chilly winter evening. Sunset On Cape Cod Bay attempts to set this tranquil scene to music.

4. Nantucket Sound

In the Atlantic Ocean, on the southern most side of Massachusetts, lies the Nantucket Sound. Enclosed by Cape Cod, and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, it is renowned for its natural beauty and abundant, diverse, and unique wildlife. A source of livelihood for fishermen, and a source of solace, relaxation, and recreation, it plays an important role to the regional economy of southern Massachusetts.

5. Red Right Return

Written for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Concert Band and it’s director Alex Pendleton, Red Right Return is a celebration of a return to “normal” after a long and challenging year of isolation and anxiety. Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School is located in the middle of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Surrounded by the ocean, this charming peninsula is home to much nautical history and quintessential sea life. Many boaters utilize the mnemonic phrase “red, right, return” as a way to keep marking buoys on the correct side of the boat when returning safely to port from the open sea. As we all returned from a year full of rocky seas, no one was more happy than performing musicians and appreciative audiences. Celebration was in order.

6. White Clouds On A Blue Sky

There is nothing like the beauty of a clear blue sky on a spring or summer day. Lying on a blanket as you look up, whether in soft grass or on a sandy beach, it’s a time to take a deep breath and appreciate how small you are in comparison to all above you. However, far more interesting and peaceful, one might say, is a parade of fluffy white clouds that float by as you direct your gaze. Clouds at a higher altitude barely seem to move at all, while clouds nearer to the ground sail past more quickly — all the time changing their relationship to one another as they move. It’s hard not to imagine characters and shapes in the formations. A bear? A dog? A boat? The imagination is sparked... there are White Clouds On a Blue Sky.

Cape Symphony at the National Seashore

What a wonderful evening in an inspirational setting…
The annual Symphony At The Seashore concert was held at the amphitheater near Salt Pond in Eastham, MA on the Cape Cod National Seashore.

So, the plan was to perform my Sunset on Cape Cod Bay at this performance (check it out here). However, due to a rain-out at the 4th of July concert in Hyannis, Jung-Ho Pak elected to open the Seashore concert with my Cape Cod Shanty (check previous blog post). The orchestra performed beautifully, and the large crowd was very receptive. All in all… a wonderful evening.

Cape Symphony Premiere of Cape Cod Shanty

I am beyond excited for the premiere of my Cape Cod Shanty next week on Cape Cod. The wonderful Cape Symphony under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak will perform this jaunty sea shanty at Aselton Park overlooking Hyannis Harbor as part of the Town of Barnstable’s Fourth of July celebrations. Beginning at 8 pm, the diverse program incudes Americana, popular, Broadway, and patriotic music.

Joy4July will be the culmination of the Town of Barnstable’s day-long celebrations, which include village parades, Hyannis Harbor boat parade, and music and dance on Main Street and at the Hyannis Village Green and Bandstand. The festivities lead up to a tradition in the making with Cape Symphony performing the second annual free concert at Aselton Park.

A visit with the Dennis-Yarmouth Concert Band

What a treat to visit with the members of the Dennis-Yarmouth Concert Band and their fine director, Alex Pendleton.

I got to listen and offer some suggestions as they prepare RED RIGHT RETURN, a piece I wrote for them this past year. It is a celebration of a return to "normalcy" and a way of promoting the great place in which they live: Cape Cod, MA.

Mr. Pendleton and the band will premiere the piece at their winter concert on January 12, 2023. I can't wait to hear the results of all their hard work.

What does the future hold for music students?

I recently wrote a new piece for my wife's 5th grade band, Cape Crusader (check it out here). Well, it wasn't too long after that schools were closed, and all work moved to online learning for the remainder of the year. She never got to perform the piece with the students, however, I did enjoy hearing students play their individual parts for her remotely — it ended up being one of their assignments to record and send to her.

So now, the larger question is, what will happen to music instruction in schools as we move forward in this strange time of social distancing? When students and teachers return to school, what will music instruction look like? Only time will tell, but it surely will look quite different, at least at first. My fingers are crossed, hoping that large group music instruction doesn't take too much of a hit. It is such an essential part of how we learn about music. Making music with others is what it's all about.

Woo Tribute

As Homecoming season is approaching, I've been reminiscing about last year at this time. My last Homecoming before retiring from the Wooster City Schools was a special one. The fourth ever Alumni Band & Reunion was a huge part of the weekend. Seeing so many proud, musical alumni come back for the halftime performance was fantastic.

One of the highlights for me was the performance of an arrangement I put together for the occasion. It was a combination of original tunes and WHS staples, and it opened the show. Below is a clip of the performance (thanks, Andi Williams!).

This was one of the more impressive marching band moments that I can recall over all of my years of teaching… what a sound! Crank it up, and give it a listen.

Marking my retirement, I recently performed my final concert with the Wooster High School Symphonic Band. Saying Goodbye was written for the group to show my respect for the students and program that I will miss greatly.

I just completed a new suite for Trombone, Bass Saxophone, and Drums. Entitled “Suiter and Lower”, it’s a sequel to my “Suite and Low“ for Trombone and Bass Saxophone.

In 5 movements, this one features 5 different styles and those individuals that inspired each movement:

I. Brutus (march - inspired by Brutus Buckeye).
II. Sergio (latin - inspired by Sergio Mendes).
III. Clyde or Jabo (funk - inspired by Clyde Stubblefield and “Jabo” Starks).
IV. Greg or Ian (chant).
V. James (jig - inspired by James Galway.

It will be performed at our annual Wooster City Schools Music Faculty Recital on January 22nd.

Two Pieces for Two Rising Stars

I had so much fun writing two pieces for two graduating seniors. Divertimento for Tuba and Concert Band was written for and premiered by David Burnett @tubadaveburnett. The Gooch was written for and premiered by jazz trombonist Peter Gooch @p_gooch.
Both are pursuing careers in music and have very bright futures ahead of them. All the best to Dave and Peter!

The latest is the chance to direct a 200 member ensemble performing our National Anthem at historic Fenway Park, the home of the MLB Champion Boston Red Sox on April 8, 2014. ...very proud of our Wooster High School musicians.

Just finished up a new march dedicated to the American Federation of Musicians Local 159. Entitled “March 159 (CLIX)”, it’s a fun play on the Roman numerals for 159: CLIX (or “clicks”). Looking forward to directing the AFM Concert Band this summer and premiering the piece. More info coming on the performances.

Over the course of this OMEA judging season, I will have adjudicated nearly 100 bands/orchestras. I’m finally beginning to realize the impact this has on my own writing and teaching. I learn so much from the directors and students that helps me with my own process, not to mention the exposure to so many new compositions. Thank You, OMEA.

If you’re in the Wooster area, come to our school district’s annual Faculty Recital on January 24th at 7:30pm at Zion Lutheran Church. My wife and I will be performing my “Suite & Low” duet for trombone and bass saxophone. It’s a lot of fun. I’ll even be breaking out the yellow pBone for this one. :-)
